Developed eastern Asian nations import a large range women from abroad as brides each year, although such cross?border marriages practically would not occur two decades ago. By having a theoretical framework and empirical evidence, we argue that developed Asian nations’ need for international brides could be the result of enhancement in females’s financial status and gender?discriminative household arrangements that insufficiently incorporate ladies’ improved status in wedding.
